PROBLEM OF NON-CATEGORICAL UTTERANCE

Abstract

The article by the material of the modern English language considers non-categorical utterance as a unit of speech rendering obliquely a message that is expressed in a direct presentation by a categorical utterance. The message is worded as a proposition which is formally presented by a sentence, but in the context of speech it is actualized in the elementary topical utterance, or dicteme. Non-categorical utterances (dictemes) express a tremendous number of connotations that make it into a powerful expressive means of language. In this quality they play an essential role in the formation of speech culture of society.
