FUTURE OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE: POLYVARIETY OR UNIFORMITY?

Abstract

The English language, having become a global one, is under the influence of other languages and cultures. A number of hypotheses about the possible ways of its further development are discussed in this paper. Among them are the conceptions of “My English”, “World Standard Spoken English”, as well as some other, representing the views of modern linguists on the future of the English language. The paper considers the role of the Standard English, as well as its versions for cross-cultural communication in respect to linguo-cultural and evolutionary points of view.
