HYANGGA: LIVING VOICES OF THE KOREAN ANTIQUITY

Abstract

The article is devoted to the ancient Korean poetry in the hyangga genre. The author analyzes its relation with the folk song and Shamanic rituals, emphasizes the strong influence of Buddhism adopted in Korea in the early Middle Ages, identifies the basic poetical motives and themes. Poem translations represented by the author are accompanied with the commentaries revealing their hidden meaning and ethical message. The researcher concludes that Korean poetical tradition originates from the ancient hyangga.
