SUPERLATIVE DEGREE OF COMPARISON OF ADJECTIVES IN THE SPEECH OF THE ENGLISH PEOPLE (BY THE MATERIAL OF THE NOVEL BY SUE TOWNSEND “NUMBER 10”)

Abstract

The article examines the superlative degree of the comparison of adjectives used in the speech of the contemporary English people to create the effect of exaggeration. The author substantiates the social significance of the original use of the superlative degree of comparison. In this connection the peculiarity of the speech of the representatives of upper and middle classes to talk about everything in an exaggerated manner is reflected. The speech strategies realized with the superlative degree of the comparison of adjectives in the speech of the contemporary English people also act as social indicators.
