SOCIO-LINGUISTIC PECULIARITIES OF LANGUAGE SITUATION IN NEW YORK CITY

Abstract

The article aims to analyze the language situation in New York City and to describe its socio-linguistic characteristics. The paper provides the population census data, the findings of the United States Census Bureau surveys, the researches devoted to identifying social markers in the citizens’ speech. The author describes the language situation parameters in relation to the region under study and summarizes some researchers’ opinions concerning the existence of a special linguistic areal in New York City and adopted stereotypes on this American English dialect.
