DICTIONARY AS A REFERENCE, TEXT, AND COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

Abstract

The article analyzes various approaches to understanding the essence and nature of the dictionary. It is concluded that the traditional perception of the dictionary as a reference reveals only part of its functions, while the understanding of the dictionary as a text allows us to explore different types of links and relations that exist within and between lemmas and between different parts of the megastructure as well. The dictionary is “a communication system” of information transmission from the lexicographer to the user, which leads to the existence of the communicative approach and allows us to make a conclusion about the presence of three interrelated approaches to understanding the nature and essence of the dictionary.
