PRÉCIOSITÉ PHENOMENON: WOMAN’S STYLE IN THE FRENCH LITERATURE OF THE XVII CENTURY

Abstract

The article is devoted to analyzing speech behaviour of French précieuses of the middle of the XVII century represented by the writers of that time. J.-B. Molière’s play “Les Précieuses ridicules” (The Ridiculous Précieuses), C. Saumaise’s works contain the set of expressions which were used in the grand salons and among the précieuses - Madame de Rambouillet and Mademoiselle de Scudéry. The analysis of these expressions allows the author to conclude that the peculiarities of education acquired by these women predetermined the tendency to make up periphrases structured according to metaphor principles developed by Aristotle in his “Poetics”.
