MULTIDIMENSIONAL GENRE SYNTHESIS IN VAJIRAVUDH RAMA’S VI PLAY “MADANAPADA”

Abstract

This article analyzes a play written by the Thai King Rama VI Vajiravudh - “Madanapada” (1923). Written at the end of the monarch’s life, it is highlighted due to the supremacy of love line, whereas before in the dramatic works of the founder of the “New Thai drama” socio-political themes dominated. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the genre features of the play. The gifted playwright managed to disclose a love conflict in an original way, combining in his work the European and Indian dramatic systems, while preserving a strong link with the traditional Thai theatre. The paper also focuses on the singularity of meters used by Vajiravudh due to which the play was recognized the top of the king’s dramaturgy.
