TOPIC CHAIN CONCEPTION IN THE WORKS BY THE CHINESE LINGUIST SHI DINGXU

Abstract

The article describes the basic conceptions of the Chinese linguist Shi Dingxu on such topic structures as topic chain. In spite of the disagreements among the linguists on whether such phenomenon should be considered a special syntactic category, the topic chain certainly plays the key role in the Chinese syntactical system. Numerous examples provided and analyzed in the works by the Professor of Hong Kong Polytechnic University Shi Dingxu indicate the wide spectrum of topic chain’s functions which manifest themselves not only at the sentence level but also at the discourse level.
