THE METAPHORICAL USE OF THE LEXEME BABY IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Abstract

The article analyses the cases of using the lexeme “baby” for describing inanimate objects and aims at examining the basis for the transfer of meaning. The transfer is based on certain cognitive features which are common for babies and described objects. Such features are the following: “young age”, “small size”, “the slackening of a physical property”, “the existence of a creator-man” and “the existence of previous generation”.
