ON THE ISSUE OF PRIMARY SOURCES OF THE ENGLISH PROVERB “ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD”

Abstract

The article is devoted to considering the primary sources of origin of the English proverb “All that glitters is not gold”. The authors try to find out how this proverb came into modern English, whether it was really the creation of William Shakespeare or whether it existed in earlier literary sources. Particular attention is paid to the history of the proverb appearance, as well as the cases of its use in the English literature of the XII-XVII centuries.
