PROBLEMS OF STANDARDIZATION OF SCOTS: RESULTS AND PROSPECTS

Abstract

The article analyses the problems of standardization of the Scottish language. It is assumed that the Scottish language belongs to a number of languages that are subject to standardization and normalization. Early standardization was impossible because the political and cultural status of the Scottish language was lower than English. The paper shows that the Scottish intellectuals began to standardize language in the ХХ century. The author analyses the academic impact of Adam Jack Aitken, the leading Scottish linguist of the century. It is believed that his activity allowed for the formation of a set of criteria to standardize the language.
