MOTIVE “WASTELAND” IN F. S. FITZGERALD’S NOVEL “THE GREAT GATSBY”

Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of the realization of the motive “wasteland” in the novel “The Great Gatsby” by the classic of the American literature, writer F. S. Fitzgerald. It examines the origin of this motive, the peculiarities of its interpretation in terms of the interaction with the American national ideas and images of the changing world at the beginning of the XX century. The study shows that in the novel the motive under analysis generates the interaction of the following oppositions: infertility versus fertility and wildness versus civilization. The article proves that egoism belongs to the core of the analyzed motive and is one of the main reasons for the degeneration of the society modern to the writer.
