ON THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES IN INTERLINGUAL PSYCHOLINGUISTICS (BY THE MATERIAL OF PHONEMES AND ANTONYMS OF THE ENGLISH AND RUSSIAN LANGUAGES)

Abstract

The article touches on one of the most difficult problems of modern linguistics - the phenomenon of universal sound-symbolism. The attempt is made to find a new approach to the problem of perceiving sound symbolistic features of living speech. The author focuses her attention on interpreting the results of a psycholinguistic experiment aimed to discover how the English phonemes are perceived by the Russian-speaking informants. The experiment results are explained by the material of antonymic pairs. The research findings allow the author to conclude that the existence of universal sound symbolism phenomenon is doubtful.
