LINGUISTIC FEATURES OF HUMOROUS DISCOURSE IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the American humorous discourse conducted on the basis of the fragments of American comedians’ performances on various themes. The topicality of this research is determined by the importance of studying national cognitive-speech patterns that are an integral part of the national cultural society. The goals of the paper are: 1) to highlight the theoretical aspects of national specificity positioning and the peculiarity of humor in sociolinguistics; 2) to examine the humorous elements of the American linguistic culture; 3) to describe the thematic expressions of American humorous discourses. The research methods include identification and description of linguistic phenomena representing the American culture, as well as their explanation from the standpoint of the national culture. The results of the study show that humor is built on deviation from social stereotypes; slang and nonsense language are characteristic features of the American linguistic culture; the subject of American humorous discourses affects various aspects of the American society’s life.
