SPECIFICITY OF NARRATOR’S IMAGE AS NARRATIVE INSTANCE IN N. S. LESKOV’S WORKS OF THE MIDDLE OF THE 1860S - THE BEGINNING OF THE 1880S

Abstract

The article deals with N. S. Leskov’s works and the peculiarities of the skaz genre in his creativity. It is noted that skaz is not only a genre in N. Leskov’s works, but also a creative method since it reflects the specificity of national identity, shows the Russian people’s life, its values, and also demonstrates the writer’s literary ideas. The narrator plays an important role in the skaz narrative structure. The analysis of N. S. Leskov’s works from the perspective of their skaz nature, the narrator’s image in them and the peculiarities of the writer’s interpretation of the narrator’s oral traits is carried out. The uniqueness of N. S. Leskov’s creative method, which made the narrator the most important component of the narration, is emphasized. The evolution stages of the narrator’s image presented by the writer are singled out: the type of a narrator that exists along with the author; the type of a “negative” narrator contrasting with the content of the work; and the type of a narrator that has ousted the author.
