“A CITIZEN OF THE EARTH”: EDWARD THOMAS AS A LINK BETWEEN “ROMANTIC ECOLOGY” AND ECO-CRITICISM

Abstract

“Ecological tradition” has long history in the English literature. Poets-romanticists created a trend nowadays called “romantic ecology”, a vivid representative of which was W. Wordsworth. At the end of the XX century there appeared eco-criticism - an ecological approach to literature. The paper examines the creative work of the English prosaic, literary critic and poet of the beginning of the XX century Edward Thomas who has been duly appreciated as an “ecological” writer only recently. The paper shows that, being a successor of “romantic ecology”, he transferred its conception to a new century and anticipated the basic provisions of eco-criticism in his works.
