Reception of J. W. Goethe’s Works by Ferdinand von Zaar

Abstract

The article considers the reception of J. W. Goethe’s works by the famous Austrian prose-writer Ferdinand von Saar (1833-1906). It is shown that J. W. Goethe’s creative work was an important landmark in the artistic world of the Austrian writer. It is ascertained that Saar’s texts contain Goethe’s reminiscences: the hero who describes in letters his tragic love story (“Marianne”); the personages’ names and plot collisions (“Hermann and Dorothea”). The article aims to identify the degree of the German classic’s influence on the Austrian writer’s creative work. Originality of the study involves postulating the receptive influence of Goethe’s works on F. von Zaar’s worldview and discourse. The paper concludes about creative re-interpretation of Goethe’s themes and motives in F. von Zaar’s works.
