Specificity of Phraseological Unit Semantics: Contextological Approach (by the Example of the Phraseological Unit “Field Day”)

Abstract

The article considers the semantic and contextological specificity of the phraseological unit “field day” (mil.) - “opportunity of extraordinary pleasure”. The study is conducted by the material of the American newspaper sub-corpus. The paper aims to identify the phraseological unit additional contextual meanings in different types of discourse. Scientific originality of the research involves the contextual approach to studying the phraseological unit semantics, which allows identifying the contextual factors that determine the situation under description. The findings indicate that the phraseological unit “field day” is often used with the verb “have”. In sports and economic discourses, the phraseological unit “field day” acquires additional meanings: “sports achievements”, “assessment”, “investments”.
