Ways of Forming Coat Colour Names in the English Language

Abstract

The research objective involves a word-formative classification of the English-language coat colour names. The material includes special texts on horse genetics, etymological and explanatory dictionaries of the English language. Scientific originality of the paper lies in the fact that the author for the first time proposes a word-formative classification of the English-language coat colour names. The suggested classification contributes to studying the lexical-semantic group “coat colour”. The conducted research has allowed the author to identify four basic ways of the coat colour name formation. The findings can be used when studying other lexical-semantic groups, for example, the Russian-language coat colour names.
