Lexical and Cognitive Specificity of the Concept BREXIT in the Context of the Modern British and European Political Discourse

Abstract

The paper aims to reveal lexical and cognitive essence of the concept BREXIT as an instrument of the modern British political discourse. The article examines semantic and cognitive features of the concept BREXIT, analyses its connotative components containing subjective-evaluative, associative, metaphorical meanings. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the authors consider the role and place of the BREXIT concept in the conceptual sphere of the modern British political discourse, reveal its influence on the British national and cultural identity. The following conclusions are justified: lexical and cognitive essence of the concept BREXIT is a multidimensional phenomenon of national consciousness determined by national and cultural identity. The concept BREXIT was introduced in the conceptual sphere of the British media discourse as a conceptual metaphor of the British discourse of the crisis period, the concept under study correlates with certain semantic fields containing metaphorical interpretation of this neologism.
