Theme of Fate and Freedom in R. P. Warren’s Novel “Band of Angels”

Abstract

The article examines the theme of freedom in the American writer Robert Penn Warren’s novel “Band of Angels” (1955). The paper aims to prove that the theme of identity is an ideological and philosophical dominant of R. P. Warren’s prose. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the novel “Band of Angels” is for the first time analysed taking into account the author’s interpretation of the theme of freedom and fate. The findings indicate that the motive of predetermination correlates with the motive of an individual’s personal responsibility: the personages recognize that freedom can’t be granted, it must be conquered. To achieve freedom means to reconcile with the past, to accept one’s dark side.
