Tendencies in Contemporary Received Pronunciation (by the Example of Oratorical Speech of Women - Participants of the British Media Discourse)

Abstract

The paper aims to reveal tendencies in contemporary Received Pronunciation (full style, official form) by the example of prepared monologic utterances of women at the age of 25-30. Scientific originality of the study involves identifying phono-stylistic peculiarities of oratorical speech of the British women as potential bearers of the contemporary linguistic norm. The author provides a statistical analysis of vowel variation in the informants’ speech within the mass media discourse, which contributes to understanding the current tendencies in contemporary Received Pronunciation. The research findings are as follows: relying on the instrumental analysis, the author identifies quantitative and qualitative characteristics of vowels and reveals specificity of consonants realization.
