Interpretation of Vina Liques in Horace’s Ode “To Leuconoe” (I, 11)

Abstract

The aim of the study is to determine the range of possible interpretations of the vina liques passage in the ode of Horace I, 11 (Hor. Carm. I, 11). The scientific novelty lies in the fact that for the first time one fragment is comprehensively analysed that traditionally left out of separate scientific interest as a secondary one to the more well-known lines of the ode I, 11. As a result of the study, the main approaches to the interpretation of the passage have been systematized, the specifics of using the verb liquare have been identified, the range of possible interpretations of vina liques based on the data of semantic and cultural-historical analysis has been outlined, and the consistency of traditional and new proposed interpretations has been established.
