Focalisation of the Theme of Death in A. P. Chekhov’s Creative Work: “Late-Blooming Flowers” (1882), “The Death of a Government Clerk” (1883), “Gusev” (1890) and “Rothschild’s Violin” (1894)

Abstract

The aim of the study is to determine the features of focalisation in A. P. Chekhov’s works of the 1880s-1890s devoted to the theme of death: “Late-Blooming Flowers” (1882), “The Death of a Government Clerk” (1883), “Gusev” (1890) and “Rothschild’s Violin” (1894). The paper is novel in that it is the first to carry out a systematic comparative analysis of Chekhov’s short stories of the second half of the 1880s-1890s devoted to the theme of death, as well as in the fact that the analysis was conducted taking into account focalisation issues, which is also being undertaken for the first time in relation to these works. As a result, the following has been proved: in all the short stories, it is shown that indifference, remoteness lead either to one’s own death or to the death of another person, which determined the importance of focalisation of the theme of death, the question of the “configuration of viewpoints” of the characters, the narrator, the author and finally the reader.
