The State Catalog of Names of Geographical Objects as a source for the study of disappeared oikonyms of the Russian Federation
Abstract
The purpose of the work is to determine the role of the State Catalog of Names of Geographical Objects as one of the main sources in the study of the disappeared oikonyms of the Russian Federation, containing the most valuable historical, cultural and statistical information for the descendants of our population. The applied goals are: clarification of the main reasons for the disappearance of former (and long-forgotten) names, description of the methodology for collecting and analyzing material for the “Toponymic Martyrology of the Russian Federation” used by the author. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the development of a methodology for identifying, with the help of an official source of information, names of settlements (oikonyms) that have disappeared for various reasons, comparing them with real cartography and archival data of the past, further study and preservation. As a result, the author gives practical recommendations on the preparation of a regional toponymic martyrology used to compile a dictionary of disappeared oikonyms of the subject of the Russian Federation, gives examples of toponymic commemorative practices for the preservation of the descendants of disappeared oikonyms.
