"The Starry Sky" in the poetry of G. R. Derzhavin and V. A. Zhukovsky

Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify the literary genesis, semantic component, and artistic potential of the image of the starry sky in the poetry of G. R. Derzhavin and V. A. Zhukovsky. Based on the analysis of Derzhavin's philosophical and solemn odes, and Zhukovsky's elegiac works, this article reconstructs the features of the artistic and poetic cosmology that developed at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries by revealing the ontological content of the image of the starry sky. The scientific novelty is determined by the comprehensive nature of the study, based on a systematic and holistic description of the image of the cosmic universe in the poetry of the late 18th – first third of the 19th century, and consists in revealing previously unnoted features of the creative perception and artistic embodiment of the image of the starry sky in the works of Derzhavin and Zhukovsky. The research establishes that, in the context of philosophical comprehension of the universe, the poets turn to the image of the star not only to denote luminous celestial bodies, but also, in comparison with celestial luminaries, speak of the transience of human life, affirm the idea of the poet's chosen service, represent the starry sky as the visible part of the universe, and identify it with the Kingdom of God. It is revealed that Derzhavin, with his planetary thinking, is occupied by the cosmos as such; he peers into and listens to the starry sky, comprehends the symphony of the cosmos through it, therefore, in his philosophical poetry, he associates stellar luminescence with celebrations in the Universe, whereas Zhukovsky's mysterious and meditative evening and night landscapes are directly related to the understanding of celestial space as the embodiment of harmonic being; through addressing the star, the poet comes to conveying the longings of the human soul.
