“Glory” by V. Nabokov. Features of the narrative strategy

Abstract

The research aims to reveal the peculiarities of the narrative strategy of V. Nabokov’s novel “Glory”. The starting point in the article is the link, repeatedly noted by researchers, between this work and the poetics of a fairy tale, a myth. The narrative of a fairy tale is often seen as a code to understanding the author’s intent. The actions of the novel’s hero and his “wanderings” also reveal the influence of the chivalric romance in its medieval and later romantic versions, although the model of the world proposed in this genre differs significantly in its basic characteristics from the model of the fairy-tale-mythological world. However, despite the difference in narrative strategies in these types of works, their features are consistently combined in the author’s intent of the novel “Glory”. The unifying principle is the concept of two worlds, which underlies the model of the universe in these two traditional variants. The scientific originality of the research lies in revealing the distinctness of V. Nabokov’s literary attitudes, which allow him not to follow his historical predecessors in their narrative solutions, but to depart from them, striving to create a different literary model of the world in its basic characteristics. As a result of the research, it has been found that in the writer’s understanding of the world, the boundary separating the universe loses its sacred meaning, and therefore the model of the world itself changes. According to the authors of the article, this decision reveals V. Nabokov’s consistent approaches in his narrative strategy, which are also manifested in the writer’s preceding Berlin novels.
