Military mapping of the 1984-1985 miners’ strike in the British media as the main method of the protest metaphorical conceptualization

Abstract

The present article aims to demonstrate the functioning of the metaphorical model PROTEST is WAR in the British media narrative of the 1984-1985 miners’ strike as a key discursive strategy for delegitimizing protest and discrediting its participants. The academic novelty of the paper lies in that the authors have also developed their own methodology for indexing the intensity of metaphors to identify the intensity index used in assessing the conceptual metaphors persuasiveness in political discourse. This methodology is based on a synthesis of previous approaches to the problem and methods of cognitive and corpus linguistics and etymological analysis. The article explicates the internal structure of the dominant military model from the perspective of its frame-slot and field organization. The framing of the model provides commentary on the mechanisms of metaphorical expansion and is carried out with distribution of the frames in its field structure to the core, near and far periphery to identify the primary and secondary actualizers of the military domain. An attempt is also made to evaluate the persuasive impact of the war metaphor through the calculation of the metaphor intensity index, which is considered the main marker of a political discourse text persuasiveness. The results showed that the military model has proved to be the most widespread in the metaphorical conceptualization of the miners’ strike narrative, characterizing by a complex cognitive organization, and also has a medium-intensity persuasive effect on recipients by the metaphor intensity index equation, indicating the ideological and pragmatic intentions of using military metaphors in protest media discourse.
