Ways of manifesting the authorial presence in the hybrid discourse of 19th-century geographical sketches

Abstract

The research aims to identify a typology of discursive strategies used to represent the authorial presence in the discourse of geographical description, based on 19th-century geographical sketches. Scientific novelty lies in the first-ever description of the hybrid features of geographical sketch texts through the prism of a dynamic shift in strategies. This approach accounts for the transition of the author’s role from that of an impartial scientist-researcher to a subjective narrator. The analysis reveals the following strategies demonstrating the authorial presence in the text. The scientific strategy provides a factual basis for the narrative; here, the author acts as a scientist-educator, employing terminological vocabulary and causal syntactic constructions. The ethnographic strategy, implemented through ethnonyms, synecdoche, and comparative and participial phrases, allows the author-ethnographer to demonstrate the inextricable link between man and nature. The aesthetic strategy, in which the author acts as a writer-artist, relies on emotional-evaluative epithets, color terms, metaphors, hyperboles, and inversions to overcome the dryness of factual scientific exposition and create deep, complex, and emotional imagery. The pragmatic strategy shifts the author’s role from a passive observer to an active statesman, moving the narrative from the scientific and artistic realms into a programmatic-prognostic framework where the description of space becomes a foundation for state planning and regional economic development. Finally, the narrative strategy unifies fragmented descriptions into a single genre (the sketch/essay), where the author models the sequence of the material and the depth of its disclosure.
