The axiological potential of cancel culture: transformation of value‑oriented meanings (based on English‑language polemical articles)

Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify the value vectors of the axiological potential of the discursive practice of cancel culture, as objectified in statements of written English‑language online texts, and to treat these as markers of ambiguous effects on the linguistic personality. The article examines the axiological characteristics of cancel culture in linguistic research, then analyzes the linguistic representation in English‑language polemical articles in the online space of communicative acts produced by the discursive practice of cancel culture, and performs their axiological interpretation. The scientific novelty of this study lies in revealing and describing transformations of the binary oppositions of value meanings that make up the axiosphere of cancel discourse from the standpoint of their axiological potential. As a result of a linguistic analysis of English‑language texts that report axiogenic events and situations of cancel culture, the study identifies the specifics of objectifying transformations of value meanings by verbal means and produces a classification of multi‑vector changes in value components at the level of: 1) regulative concepts; 2) social norms; 3) ethical postulates of verbal communication; 4) pragmatic postulates of verbal communication; 5) linguistic representation of self‑identification/identification.
