Acoustic Realization of the Ossetian Vowel /æ/ in Unstressed Position

Abstract

The article presents the results of an experimental phonetic study of one of the key vowels of the Ossetian vocalic system – /æ/ – traditionally classified as “weak” in Iranian studies. This characterization of the vowel dates back to grammars of the first half of the 20th century and implicitly assumes the presence of reduction changes in the vowel in unstressed positions. However, to date, this postulate has not received instrumental acoustic confirmation. The study aims to verify the hypothesis of the quantitative and qualitative reduction of this vowel in unstressed positions based on instrumental acoustic data. The scientific novelty lies in identifying the fundamental absence of qualitative reduction of the vowel /æ/ in the Ossetian vocalic system, which invalidates its established classification as a “weak” vowel. For the first time, it is demonstrated that the unstressed position does not trigger significant formant changes, thereby testifying to the preservation of the qualitative invariant of the vowel /æ/. The results obtained demonstrate: 1) the absence of systemic qualitative changes in the formant structure of the analyzed vowel; 2) the presence of a quantitative reduction in duration, which is statistically insignificant at the individual level and significant only when pooling all data; and 3) the invalidity of categorizing the Ossetian vowel /æ/ as acoustically “weak”. The work contributes to the typology of vocalic systems in Iranian languages and proposes refined parameters for the lexicographical and orthoepic description of the Ossetian language.
