Narrative strategies in A. A. Starobinets' collection of short stories "Icarus's Gland. The Book of Metamorphoses"

Abstract

The aim of the research is to determine the principles and mechanisms of forming the communicative strategy of A. A. Starobinets' collection "Icarus's Gland. The Book of Metamorphoses". The article analyzes the features of narration and composition of the stories in the collection, considers the ways of representing metamorphosis at the plot and narrative levels, and explores the intertextual connections between the works of the book and their role in forming a unified strategy. Special attention is paid to the problems of the characters' loss of subjectivity and the collection's texts raising the question of the freedom of human will under the conditions of discursive influence. The scientific novelty of the study consists in identifying the compositional models of the collection, the recurring options of organizing metamorphosis plots, as well as in establishing the relationship between the character's plot transformation and the change in the narrating consciousness. It is shown for the first time that the unity of the collection is ensured not only by thematic commonality but also by the implementation of a communicative strategy. The results obtained showed that the stories of the collection depict various forms of the loss of subjectivity, the worldview of the texts is based on the idea of the discursive nature of social reality, and the overall communicative strategy of the collection is aimed at problematizing the readers' conceptions of the boundaries of humanity.
