Defabulization as a principle of forming novelistic reality in V. Woolf's novel "Orlando"

Abstract

The aim of the research is to prove that defabulization in V. Woolf's novel "Orlando" (1928) represents a systemic principle of constructing novelistic reality, possessing an independent meaning-making potential. The article examines parodic and metafictional narrative techniques that disrupt linear chronology and cause-and-effect relationships, as well as the structure of the protagonist's consciousness, which functions as a fluid integrity absorbing all the experience of preceding centuries. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that defabulization in the novel "Orlando" is conceptualized for the first time as a semantically loaded principle that not merely weakens eventfulness, but constitutes a new ontology of narrative, where the form of consciousness and creative reflection become the basis of novelistic reality. As a result of the study, it was established that in "Orlando", defabulization acquires a playful, parodic character; using the form of a biography, Woolf consistently deconstructs it from within, transforming the novel from a chronicle of life into a meta-reflective model of perception, where the androgynous consciousness becomes the sole source of reality formation.
