BIBLICAL CODE IN NOVEL “WATERLAND” BY GRAHAM SWIFT

Abstract

The author analyzes the multilevel structure of novel “Waterland” written by contemporary English writer Graham Swift, suggests that the one of the possible codes of novel interpretation is biblical, pays special attention to the analysis of a large number of marked and unmarked allusions to the Bible and their functions in the text, reveals allusive connections with the preceding literary tradition, and basing on the conducted research proves that the free use of themes and images of the Old and New Testaments in the structure and system of novel images can be considered as one of the fundamental principles of author’s strategy.
