WILLIAM ALGER: FROM “THE POETIC HERITAGE OF MIKHAIL LERMONTOV”

Abstract

The author undertakes the attempt to trace the history of creating one of the English translations of Russian poet Mikhail Lermontov’s work “Rememberest thou the day when we…”, performed by American clergyman and writer William Alger in 1865. W. Alger became acquainted with this work thanks to the collected works in the German language “The Poetic Heritage of Mikhail Lermontov” by F. Bodenshtedt. Having performed the translation of a single work by Lermontov, W. Alger presented, in fact, his own interpretation of Thomas Moore’s English poem “The Evening Gun”.
