FUNCTIONS OF AN IMAGINARY LANGUAGE “SPEEDTALK” IN THE STORY BY R. HEINLEIN “GULF”
Abstract
The article examines the functions of an imaginary language “speedtalk” in the poetics of the story by R. Heinlein “Gulf”, clarifies the meaning of the conceptions “artificial” and “imaginary” language. The paper provides examples of author’s original description of various characteristics of an imaginary language allowing creating in the work of literature a colourful image of a fantastic world and also analyzes the typical for linguistic fantasy motive of using the language for manipulating human consciousness.
