ANALYSIS OF AN IMAGE OF LORD DIETRICH OF BERN IN “THE SONG OF THE NIBELUNGS”: AXIOLOGICAL APPROACH

Abstract

The authors compare the major medievalists’ interpretations of an image of Dietrich of Bern in the epic poem “The Song of the Nibelungs” and propose some observations based on content-analysis and etymological analysis of the text. The paper argues that, contrary to the common interpretation of an image of Dietrich as the only positive personage of a “Song”, the author of the poem does not consider him as a conscience bearer and does not rank him above the other personages in the axiological or ethical perspective.
