PRAGMATIC ASPECT OF THE METONYMIZATION OF THE ANTHROPONYM “ASSAD” IN THE BRITISH POLITICAL DISCOURSE

Abstract

The article provides an analysis of the peculiarities of functioning of the proper name “Assad” in the British politicians’ speeches devoted to the theme of Syrian military conflict and the activity of the President of Syria Bashar al-Assad. Due to the contextually determined metonymy the anthroponym “Assad” loses the generic affiliation and becomes the referent of the concept “Assad’s regime”. The paper shows how by means of syntactic and semantic relation the identification of the concepts “Assad” and “ISIL” (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) occurs, which promotes demonization of the Syrian leader.
