LITERARY TRANSLATION AND TRANSLATORS IN ENGLAND IN THE MIDDLE AGES

Abstract

The article deals with one of the stages of formation and development of literary translation in England. The notion “literary translation” and the way it was interpreted in the Middle Ages are specified. The review of translations and translators, thanks to whom the English literary tradition got rich by new forms and ways of expression, figurative means, themes, ideas, and rhythmometric systems of versification, is given. Some theoretical views on translation are presented. Special attention is paid to the cross-literal relations and to the fact which national literatures were the subject of translation in England during this period.
