SOCIOLINGUISTIC ASPECT OF NORMATIVITY OF CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH

Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the norms of contemporary English in the sociolinguistic aspect. It reveals the notion “norm”, gives a socio-historical perspective of linguistic normativity. The author deals with the issues of “correct” and “good” English from the sociolinguistic point of view and quotes different linguists’ opinions. It is shown that written language norms are not always appropriate for speech, and the notion “normativity” is relative in this case.
