THE ROLE OF THE KINGS-EDUCATORS RAMA IV MONGKUT AND RAMA V CHULALONGKORN IN THE NEW THAI LITERATURE FORMATION

Abstract

The article is devoted to the reforms of the Kings Rama IV and Rama V, held in Siam in the second half of the XIX century. Significant transformations affected all aspects of life of the Thai society, including the cultural sphere. Particular attention is paid to the enlightenment influence on theatre and dramaturgy. Owing to these two monarchs’ activity the Thai literature passed the so-called belated-accelerated way of development, and the tendencies of the formation of modern literature features started to appear in it; new forms also emerged in theatre art that became transient from the traditional “dance” to “conversational” drama of the European type.
