CHORUS APPEARANCE IN A. N. ARBUZOV’S PLAYS OF THE 1930S

Abstract

The article analyzes some common features of A. N. Arbuzov’s plays written before the Great Patriotic War: “The Six Beloved”, “A Long Road”, “Tanya”, “City at the Dawn”. In these plays the dramatist wants to draw the audience into the scene, he finds it necessary to articulate public opinion on individuals’ behaviour in conflict situations. Relying on the antique theatre traditions the dramatist introduced the chorus image which satisfies his purpose. The chorus appears in the play “City at the Dawn” in extraordinary situation: the characters pursue a common goal in life-threatening circumstances which predetermined the necessity to articulate (by chorus) public opinion on characters and their actions. The chorus in the play is simultaneously the builders’ common soul and the integrity of individuals.
