THE PECULIARITIES OF ARTISTIC EMBODIMENT OF THE CHARACTER-SAINT IN I. S. SHMELYOV’S NOVEL “NURSE FROM MOSCOW”

Abstract

The article discusses the peculiarities of the artistic embodiment of the character-saint in I. S. Shmelyov’s novel “Nurse from Moscow”. The research attention is focused on the image of Dar’ya Stepanovna Sinitsyna. The analysis proves that the image belongs to the hagiographic-idyllic type of saint. The article shows the possible pre-images of this character from the history of the Russian literature. The author argues that the image of the saint I. Shmelyov raises to the symbol of all the Russian people, with all their centuries of suffering and faith in the bright future, given by God.
