ETYMOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION OF ENGLISH PERSONAL NAMES
Abstract
The article deals with the etymology and history of English personal names. Special attention is paid to some existing classifications of English anthroponyms. The paper presents the author’s classification of the personal names of the English language according to their etymological features: borrowings from the Bible and mythology, from various source languages, from the names of objects and phenomena of the surrounding world. The topicality of the study is determined by the fact that this classification gives an idea of the origin of names, their structure and semantic meanings, which formed the basis for the formation of English personal names.
