THE PERCEPTION AND ASSESSMENT OF A. P. CHEKHOV’S EARLY SHORT STORIES (1882-1888) BY ENGLISH TRANSLATORS

Abstract

The article deals with the first attempts of English translators in interpretation of A. P. Chekhov’s works. Based on the material of A. P. Chekhov’s early short stories (“The Sister”, “At Home”, “That Wretched Boy”, “A Chameleon”), the features of the English-speaking manner of writing typical for the epoch and unique for each translator are shown. The author points out the inconsistency of the translation strategy, however the striving of translators to show the peculiarities of the individual style of the Russian writer, especially the dynamics of the characters’ speech, which is rich in colloquial and expressive vocabulary, can be observed.
