THE PROTAGONIST OF M. YU. LERMONTOV’S POEM “THE TAMBOV TREASURER’S WIFE” AND PUSHKIN’S TRADITION

Abstract

The article analyzes Pushkin’s tradition in depicting the protagonist of M. Yu. Lermontov’s ironic poem “The Tambov Treasurer’s Wife”, during the creation of which the poet was at the stage of searching for his hero. The results of this search are embodied in the image of Garin. At the same time, Lermontov sometimes proceeded openly from Pushkin’s experience, prompting the reader to compare his character with the character of Pushkin’s “Eugene Onegin”, and sometimes, implementing the principle of Pushkin formally, destroyed essentially it from within, while simultaneously filling it with his own content. Some of the discoveries made by Lermontov in “The Tambov Treasurer’s Wife” will subsequently be rethought and represented in “A Hero of Our Time”.
