PREFACE TO THE TRANSLATION OF THE NOVEL “A NEST OF GENTLEFOLK”: LI NI AS A TRANSLATOR AND INTERPRETER OF TURGENEV

Abstract

Li Ni is a Chinese translator actually unknown in Russia. His translation of I. S. Turgenev’s novel “A Nest of Gentlefolk” is considered one of the most authoritative in China. For the first time the article proposes a holistic analysis of the preface written by Li Ni as an introductory word explaining the reasons for his reference to this text and the content of the main ideas and images of Turgenev’s novel to the Chinese reader. The preface has not been translated into Russian until today and hasn’t been available to scientists in Russia yet.
