“PAGAN AND MEDIEVAL RELIGIOUS SENTIMENT” BY M. ARNOLD IN THE CONTEXT OF DISPUTES OF THE VICTORIAN ERA

Abstract

M. Arnold’s essay “Pagan and Medieval Religious Sentiment” (1864) is a contribution to polemics about the advantages of paganism and Christianity. The earliest embodiment of the idea of the essay was the poem “The Forsaken Merman” (1849), where the bright underwater kingdom is opposed to the gray Christian world, which the heroine prefers. Comparing in the essay the cheerful hymn to Adonis by Theocritus with the hymn of St. Francis, for whom the world is transformed by spiritual feeling, the poet considers it possible for a combination of two world attitudes. The essay in a short form expresses Arnold’s desire to renew the Christian religion.
