I. S. TURGENEV’S NOVEL “THE NOBLE NEST” IN THE ASSESSMENTS OF THE TRANSLATOR ZHI LIANG

Abstract

I. S. Turgenev’s novel “The Noble Nest” is one of the most beloved in China. During the twentieth century, it was translated dozens of times. One of the best contemporary translators of this novel is Zhi Liang, a graduate of the Faculty of Russian Language and Literature of Peking University, a professor at Shanghai Huadong Normal University and a deputy chairman of the comparativists’ association in Shanghai. The article focuses on the preface that Zhi Liang prefixed to his translation of “The Noble Nest”, because in it he expressed his attitude to Turgenev’s novel and proposed his understanding of its key images and ideas, somewhat different from the traditional interpretations of this text in China. Zhi Liang’s assessments are to some extent subjective, but they are sincere and indicate the translator’s personal involvement. His vision is free from stereotypes and important for the Chinese tradition of understanding Turgenev’s creative work.
